On a freezing Martin Luther King Jr weekend the Boston Advantage 2007 Black team was one of the only solutions to melting the ice that covered the JWK Memorial Tournament, at least inside the rink. The teams’ quick feet allowed them to light the lamp for a tournament high 37 goals while being stingy and only letting up 10 across their seven games.
The weekend started well with two wins on Friday against the Holy Name Stars (5-1) and the Connecticut Condors (6-0). Saturday morning the team faced a bump in the road that the boys would later get the chance to flatten out. Advantage fell short against the Woodbridge Wolfpack with a 3-1 loss which would turn out to be BA’s only loss of the tournament. Saturday night saw the team get back to their winning ways by dominating the game and coming away with a 9-0 victory over the Central Mass Outlaws. The win landed BA the 3rd seed in the playoffs where they dispatched the New England Wolverines back to their den with a quarterfinal win (5-3).
Championship Monday saw the team face off against the Greater Boston Jr. Bruins. The boys were fully motivated and came out flying and controlled the game but were only up 1-0 after the first period. The team continued to move the puck well offensively and finally started to light the lamp and played strong team defense on their way to their third shutout victory of the tournament. The final was 7-0 BA and the win was satisfying as it allowed the team to avenge a tough early season loss to the Jr Bruins but also put them into the championship game. It was a great effort in all three zones and one of the most complete games they have played all season.
The Championship game against the Woodbridge Wolves gave BA a chance to flatten out that earlier bump they faced on Friday. The first period saw the boys down 1-0 but they were able to tie the game and end the first period tied 1-1. The second period saw BA down again but they continued to battle and tied the game to end the second period 2-2. The third period saw Woodbridge jump out to a quick 3-2 lead and the period stayed that way into the final minute. Out of a time out BA took the offensive zone and never relented and scored with 29.7 seconds left to tie the game and send and it to overtime. BA controlled the puck for most of the period but the 3 on 3 overtime format left some chances for Woodbridge who had two breakaways. BA’s goalie Mike Karo robbed Woodbridge both times with his outstanding glove. BA seized control again and never looked back. Owen Fleck took a pass in the neutral zone and then beat the defender with a self-pass off the boards which he took to the net and then beat the goalie and for the game and championship winning goal to defeat Woodbridge 4-3 for the JWK Memorial 2007 AAA title. The boys played well together as a team the entire tournament and never thought they were out of a game and their hard work paid off.
Congratulations Boston Advantage 2007 Black Team!
